Credit Levels

There are diffent types of academic credit you can earn for taking Encountering the World of Islam (EWI). Most people take EWI to enrich their understanding and do not need offical recognition of their study. We highly recommend the certificate level for most people.

Certificate - To earn a certificate, you will need to attend course lectures and read the Key and Basic Readings (about 35 pages per lesson). You will participate in weekly discussion forum postings, take four quizzes, and present an oral report. Most students participate in the course at the certificate level.

Remember, if you have to miss classes, audio files and lecture notes are available in the on-line classroom to keep you up to date in the class.

Audit - Easiest option. You direct your own learning by attending lectures and reading the book selections as you are able. We strongly encourage you to read the Key Readings each week (20 pages), but you are not required to do other assignments if you do not have time. However, from experience, we know that the course is most effective in students' lives when they do the assignments and deep reflection activities required for the certificate and other credit options. Since auditing the course costs the same price as taking it for a certificate, we encourage all students to invest in earning a certificate if they are able to do so.

Academic Credit - Each school's requirements are different. Be sure to read your school's syllabus carefully to understand what is expected of you. At a minimum, you will need to attend the course lectures and read the Key, Basic, and Full Readings (55 pages each week). Additional readings may also be assigned depending on whether you are seeking undergraduate or graduate credit. You will participate in weekly discussion forum postings, take four quizzes, and present a final project or oral exam, which may include a written paper. The project length depends on the credit level and number of credits given.

Continuing Education Units - The Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) offers continuing education units (CEU) for teachers in Christian schools. For more information, please see the ACSI page.
